I teach students using an Orton-Gillingham based method called The Barton Reading and Spelling Program. I’ve taken professional development in Making Math Real 9-Lines.
I’ve been in private practice since 2008 teaching students with dyslexia how to read, write, and spell. Currently, I am teaching online using Zoom and Whizzimo. I am well versed in special education and will attend one IEP meeting per school year complimentary. I provide unlimited phone, text, and email support and walk with you on this journey to literacy.
I only use soft positive language and your student will never feel they’ve done something wrong or made a mistake. I teach each concept to mastery.
While English has only 44 sounds, we have 1,100 different ways to represent those sounds with letters and letter combinations. This is why it takes dyslexics about 3 years to move through all of these concepts. We read and spell words at the same time.
I believe people are more a sum of their strengths than they are their challenges. We need to make absolutely sure we celebrate their many gifts! They need to spend plenty of time enjoying the things they love, but consistent tutoring is important. I defer to parents to create that work/life balance.
My youngest student taught is 5 and the oldest was 79! It was quite a blessing to teach a senior man who had never learned to read. It’s never too late!
